Covid is a worldwide pandemic, affecting people in every continent. In Ethiopia, a country in the Horn of Africa, the coronavirus has hit hard. On Sunday, March 7, 2021, the first 2.2 million doses of the coronavirus vaccine arrived in Ethiopia.Administrators are now working to begin distribution. The children in Ethiopia, the second most populous country in Africa, have been patiently waiting throughout the pandemic, changing their routines to reduce the spread of germs. The book COVID-19 HELPERS shows children that these sacrifices, including limiting time in schools, putting off favorite activities, reducing visits to loved ones, and wearing masks, have been an important part of reducing the infection rate. Now the e-book version of Covid-19 Helpers can be read in the native tongue of millions in Ethiopia.
The Amharic translation of COVID-19 Helpers was made in partnership with Hanna Demeke, a nurse at the CDC in Atlanta, GA. Hanna is a colleague from the non-profit organization where I volunteer, Open Hearts Big Dreams. If you’d like to read more about how this collaboration came to be, please check out the blog post on the web site of Open Hearts Big Dreams.
