THE GREAT CRITIQUE

April 29, 2023 @ 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

SCBWI Great Critique 2023

THE GREAT CRITIQUE with Guest Speaker, Mary Boone, on SATURDAY, APRIL 29, 2023, from 1 to 4 PM Pacific.

Join us this year for the Great Critique, hosted again on Zoom, which follows our April Professional Meeting Series keynote lecture, “Mentor Texts,” with speaker Jolie Stekly.

The Great Critique will give writers and illustrators the opportunity to receive feedback from a published professional, while experiencing a model critique group of peers.

Participants new to critique groups will get a chance to experience first-hand how the critiquing process can help strengthen their work, while those already in a critique group will enjoy feedback from a fresh set of eyes and ears.

IMPORTANT DETAILS—PLEASE READ

How will this work via Zoom?

After registration closes on April 20, attendees will receive an email with instructions on how to submit their work into a dedicated OneDrive folder. Manuscripts or illustrations must be uploaded by April 26. No late manuscripts or last-minute changes will be accepted. A Zoom link will be emailed closer to the event.

What do I submit?

  • WRITERS may share the first 500 words of their manuscript.
  • ILLUSTRATORS AND WRITER-ILLUSTRATORS may share a picture book dummy or up to five illustration samples.
  • NONFICTION CREATORS should sign up for the appropriate age category for the work they plan to share.

How will the event work?

1–1:15 pm Mini-Presentation by Guest Speaker Mary Boone

There’s more to successful critiquing than gathering writers and sharing manuscripts. Great critique groups have chemistry, often writing in the same genre and during the same stages of their career. Join author Mary Boone as she shares tips for forming critique groups that truly elevate everyone’s work, while embracing the philosophy: When one succeeds, everyone succeeds!

Mary Boone has written more than 60 books for young readers—including her hit MG nonfiction book Bugs for Breakfast—all while helping to coordinate SCBWI’s Tacoma Network happenings and monthly critique sessions. Look for her two, upcoming picture books slated for release in 2024!

For more about Mary and her books, visit: www.boonewrites.com

1:15–4 pm Group Critiquing Sessions

Break out into category-specific critique groups (picture books, middle grade, young adult) of approximately eight participants and led by one published author or illustrator.

You must pre-register! Since space is available on a first-come, first-served basis, the Great Critique usually fills quickly—so don’t delay. It’s the event you’ve been waiting for!
