COVID-19 Helpers is a story for kids about the coronavirus and the people helping during the 2020 pandemic. This picture book describes, in age-appropriate language, what COVID-19 is, how you get it, and how a community can come together to keep you safe. The key message of the beautifully illustrated book, designed for children from five to eleven years old, is that everyone can help fight COVID-19—everyone including children.
“I hope kids will feel proud about the contributions they are making,” Bacon says. “Staying away from school, missing sports games, skipping birthday celebrations—those are real sacrifices.” And they are sacrifices that contribute greatly to reducing the spread of this global pandemic.
The book is illustrated by Kary Lee. “Kids are smart,” Lee says. “They understand what’s going on sometimes better than the adults. We need them to know they have a voice, and that we’re listening.”
COVID-19 Helpers was the winner of the Emory Global Health Institute’s competition for a children’s e-book about the pandemic. It was chosen from more than 250 entries. The book will be available in November in English and Spanish.
