Make your own Book of Tips

Go beyond reading!

If you’re an expert at something, it’s fun to write a book! And YOU are an expert at lots of things. Maybe you are great at making your dog happy. Or messing up your room. No? You might be an expert at not napping. Or getting grass-stained knees.

Okay, those might not be the kinds of things MOST people write books about. But neither is our book, I Hate Reading which is a book of tips… tips about how to avoid your daily 20 minutes of reading!

I Hate Reading was written by two brothers when they were in the 2nd and 4th grade (with a little help from their mom). So if they can write a book, so can you!

Step 3: Come up with an idea & 2 tips

Your idea…

We  know you’re an expert in SOMETHING, even if it’s something very silly. Here are some ideas:

  • How to ride a bike when you really don’t want to
  • How to swim when you really don’t want to
  • How to sit still when you really don’t want to
  • How to keep quiet when your family is trying to work in the other room
  • What are YOU really good at doing (or avoiding)

Your two tips…

Once you know what your book is about, you need to think of two pieces of advice (tips) that would help someone do that thing. For example:

  • How to ride a bike: TIP 1: start with your feet on the ground  TIP 2: ride a scooter instead
  • How to swim: TIP 1: dip in 1 toe at a time TIP 2: Hum under water. It sounds funny and will blow bubbles!
  • How to sit still: TIP 1: Pretend you are a rock TIP 2: Go behind the couch so no one sees you not sitting still
  • How to keep quiet TIP 1: Move your mouth but don’t actually talk TIP 2: Pretend you’re in a silent movie
  • You get the idea? Good! Let’s move on to step 3

Step 4: Fill in the blanks with your idea, tips… and draw a picture in the box.

You may have already done those things is step 3. But if not, you can do them now.
