Try This: The Reading Pose Challenge

Do you know a kid who can’t sit still while they read?

The truth is, there isn’t one “right” way to position your body when you read. Try “The Reading Pose Challenge” at your next story time.

Here’s how:
Tell each kid to grab a book. Challenge them to read (silently) in each of these positions:

  • Read while standing
  • Now, stand on one foot!
  • Sit crisscross on the floor.
  • Curl up like a cat.
  • Read while wiggling like a snake.
  • Walk around slowly while reading (make sure the room is clutter free)
  • And last but not least, ask them to invent their own reading pose and give it a silly name, like…
    • The Pretzel Page Turner
    • The Story Sloth
    • Once Upon A One-Legged Flamingo

At the end, ask the kids, “Which reading pose did you like most? Why?” Everyone will learn something about their own reading preferences, while having a bit of fun.
