When kids learn to read, they are taught an entire system of signs and symbols. And those teaching often don’t ask too many questions about WHY reading is the way it is. The book Alphabuddies: G Is First plays with some of the elements of literacy that no one ever really questions when teaching kids to read. But the kids themselves question those things!
One element of literacy that is often overlooked is the fact that we say the alphabet in the same order every time. Why do we say A-B-C all the time… and not G-D-H or some other order? In this book, the letter “G” asks the question, “Why is letter ‘A’ always first?”
Kids, too, can wonder: is the order of the letters important? What do you think? Check out this book trailer and find out more.
In this video about the book, Alphabuddies: G Is First by Beth Bacon and Karen Kane, the getter “G” is reading an alphabet book. “G” reads: a b c d e f g. But then… “G” is crying! WAAAAAAA!
The letter “G” is not happy! Do you want to know why?
Because “A” is first. “A” is always first. “G” thinks that is not fair! Everyone should take turns.
But the letter “a” says NO!
This makes the letters “G” and “Z” sad. Would you be sad if YOUR friend didn’t take turns? Don’t we all have to take turns?
