What does it take to raise a baby panda?

Nov 8, 2022

Do you know how much work it is to take care of a baby panda? They are born with no fur, just thin pink skin, they’re unable to see, unable to walk—and to go to the bathroom, their bellies need to be massaged. It’s so much work that panda mamas can only take care of one cub at a time. So when  Lun Lun, a giant panda at  Zoo Atlanta, surprised everyone by having twins, the zoo staff had to pitch in.

Every few hours the keepers swapped the cubs between Lun Lun and their workroom. The thing is, Lun Lun didn’t know she had twins—and the zookeepers couldn’t bring them all together until the cubs were old enough to walk. In the meantime, People waited in long lines to see them and reporters came from all over the world. Nobody knew how Lun Lun would react when she finally met them both. And that’s what makes the book The Panda Cub Swap so exciting! We’ll let you read the story to find out.

If you want to learn more about this book, and some other brilliant new books, attend the free SCBWI-WWA Inside Story zoom meeting on November 13, 2022. See you there!
