Discover the words invented the year you were born!

May 21, 2021

Here’s a fun word game to play with your kids, or just to play yourself!
Visit the Merriam-Webster Time Traveler website and enter the year you were born. The site generates a list of the words that were first used in print that year.

  • If your child is 11 years old, they were born around the time the term “Instagram” was used in print.
  • If your child is 7 years old, they were born around the time the term “Black Lives Matter” entered the lexicon.
  • If your child is 13 years old, they were born around the time people started using the term “crowdfund.”
  • If you are 30 years old, you were born the same year we started using the term “infinity pool.”

Words are not the static things we think they are. New words pop up all the time.

Check out the Time Traveler website and discover what words were born around the same time as you and your kids!
