What do kids who don’t like to read have in common with banned books?

Sep 16, 2019

My book titled The Worst Book Ever wants more than anything to be banned from the library. So it does everything it can think of to get on a librarian’s nerves. The book doesn’t end up on the Banned Books List. Instead, it finds itself featured in story time. Story time! Yikes!

In honor of Banned Books Week (which, in case your calendar is not already marked, is Sept 22-28 this year) I asked: What do kids who don’t like to read have in common with authors whose books are banned from libraries and schools? Here are some thoughts:

They are outliers.

They are shunned by the status quo.

They are misunderstood.

They are disapproved of.

Maybe the books that appeal to them are the ones that are different, banned, outside the norm.

The attention they get is negative attention.

They can feel isolated

Deep down they want to be loved

They are not banned by everyone….. Librarians stand up for them.
