What is Amazon FreeTime Unlimited and will it help my reluctant reader?

Jul 30, 2018

Amazon is always coming up with new offerings. Amazon FreeTime Unlimited is one of the newest promotions for kids. The content in this offering is aimed at kids ages 3 to 12. The program promises thousands of titles of books, movies, games and TV shows to be read or watched on Kindle Fire devices.

What content is included in Amazon FreeTime Unlimited?

Amazon lists books, games, TV shows, movies, and educational apps as the content. It advertises the content as from trusted sources, like PBS, Disney, Sesame Street, and Nickelodeon.

What parental controls are included in Amazon FreeTime Unlimited?

Caregivers can limit the media types, such as passive activities like movies and or non-educational games games. There’s also a way to “gate” entertainment like cartoons until after certain goals have been met, such as reading for a certain amount of time. Bedtime settings can disable the devices at a certain time of day.

Is Amazon FreeTime Unlimited a free program?

You can try the first month for free, but after that it’s not a free program. It’s a paid subscription that can be used with your Amazon Kindle Fire. There is one exception to the fee: If you have a Fire KD Kids Edition Tablet, however, you automatically receive a year of Amazon FreeTime at no extra cost. Owners of other devices are required to pay for the subscription.

Are Amazon FreeTime Unlimited plans organized per family or per kid?

The program depends on profiles and the assumption is that each child will get his or her won profile. The program offers two plans, one for a single child and one for a family. The single child plan allows you to register one child profile for Amazon FreeTime. The family plan allows you to register up to four children’s profiles.

How is Amazon FreeTime Unlimited different than just using a Kindle Fire?

The Amazon Free Time Program is a profile-based experience. That means it serves up content based on the user’s profile. So kids can’t use the family’s Kindle Fire general features  such as in-app purchases and social media access. This can be a good thing if you want to limit the use of those features.

Is Amazon FreeTime Unlimited the same as Amazon Prime?

No. It’s a different program with different content. Amazon Prime members are eligible for discount on the Amazon FreeTime plan.
