Starting this week, you’ll begin see a new cover for my second book, The Book No One Wants To Read. The cover is the only thing that’s been changed. The story inside is the same.
Q: Why did you change the cover of the book?
A: I love the stop sign cover—and all the irony of inviting people to start a book with an emblem that says, “Halt!”—I realized that having the book’s face on the cover is more authentic to the experience of reading this book. Just like my other book, The Worst Book Ever, the book itself is the narrator. The book is talking here and I like the idea of starting off the relationship between the reader and the writer with the reader’s first glance at the cover.
Q: Does this mean your two books, The Worst Book Ever and The Book No One Wants To Read, are a series?
A: My books are a series, but not because of the cover. What makes them a series is that they’re all books dedicated to girls and boys who don’t like to read. Two other books are in this series, but those books are not narrated by the book itself, so they don’t have faces on the covers. Those books are I Hate Reading and Blank Space.
Q: What happens to all the other copies of The Book No One Wants To Read that are out there with the original cover?
Perhaps they’ll become collector’s items. Who knows. It’s the same book inside. I like to think the experience is all about reading what’s inside? They say you can’t tell a book by its cover. But the cover is literally the “first page” of the book so I wanted to begin the relationship the book’s face. (And the stop sign is still on the Title page.)
Q: How can you do a thing like change the cover?
Change can be hard. Some people may prefer the other cover. But I believe this new red cover fits the book more comfortably. There’s a long history of books changing their covers over the years. Have you seen all the different covers for the book, The Wizard of Oz?
Q: How is the transition going?
A: As I write this, we’re definitely in a transition time. You can maybe even see the old cover on this web site! It takes a while to go through the complete transition. The new cover is available for the ebook and the paperback. The hardcover will take a little bit longer to get on the store shelves. Also around the Internet, you’ll probably see both covers for a while. Thanks for being patient during the transition. And thanks for reading this book! Even though the book itself claims that no one wants to read it… I’m very happy to say some people have actually read it. What do you think?
